Welsh Future Education Leaders Programme

A single National Programme for those aspiring to, or those who have been recently appointed to, a director-level role in the provision of education services in Wales. The Welsh Future Education Leaders Programme is a leadership development programme for senior leaders who are ambitious both for themselves and for the children and young people they serve.

The Welsh Future Education Leaders Programme is a collaboration between Staff College Cymru, ADEW, WLGA and the Welsh Government. It builds upon the highly successful Welsh Leadership Programme for Directors that took place during 2015/2016 and has been co-designed with serving Directors specifically for the education sector in Wales. The programme content will also draw from other senior leadership programmes offered to aspiring directors across the public sector in England and Scotland and will provide an opportunity for senior officers in Education in Wales to learn from each other and together prepare for the next phase of their careers. The application process consists of three elements:

  • Sponsorship;
  • Statement of commitment;
  • Faculty review.

Prospective applicants must be nominated to take part in the programme by their current Director, line manager or, in the case of recently appointed directors, another appropriate senior colleague who will act as their sponsor. Application is through a short online application form, which can be accessed here.  The sponsor will nominate a potential applicant who meets the eligibility criteria and provide a short statement of support which outlines how this applicant will benefit from participation on the programme.

Once the sponsor nomination has been received, the prospective applicant will be asked to submit a short statement of agreement online which confirms their aspiration and readiness to step up to a director level role within 12 – 36 months. Applications must be submitted by the deadline, and will only be processed following the receipt of both submissions from the sponsor and prospective applicant. Applications will be reviewed by the programme faculty and applicants will be notified during the week commencing 14th August 2017.



Participation in the programme requires a minimum commitment to a total of 6 days*, over a 6-month period beginning in October 2017. In addition, participants will also have to agree to complete a 360⁰ survey.

*an additional 2-day commitment would be required of recently appointed directors to attend targeted learning opportunities which are likely to be in November and December 2017
