Introduction
This new module is designed specifically for DCS leaders navigating new administrations, increasing complexity, financial pressure and significant corporate change. While DCSs already demonstrate outstanding system leadership and resilience, the role now requires even greater political awareness and clarity.
With unprecedented political instability, LGR on the horizon, and complex organisational change affecting many areas of local government, today’s DCSs face challenges well beyond the traditional remit – not least the financial ones.
Today’s DCS role demands exceptional political literacy, resilience and leadership confidence. This module supports DCSs to:
- Interpret and navigate complex political environments
- Manage high‑profile and influential relationships
- Influence decision‑making across corporate and partnership settings
Participants will explore how to lead effectively in situations where multiple stakeholders hold equally valid – but competing – perspectives. The module builds confidence in reading shifting political climates, managing competing priorities, and influencing strategic decisions under public and organisational scrutiny.

By strengthening political astuteness alongside authentic leadership, DCSs are better equipped to lead through uncertainty, safeguard vital services, and champion the best outcomes for children.
Part 1 : Virtual learning, Online – 5th August, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
A live online session introduces key concepts and frameworks, providing firm foundations and preparing participants for deeper exploration.
Part 2 : In-person learning, Birmingham -14th September, full day
An interactive, in‑person session in Birmingham delivered as part of the wider DCS development day. Small group sizes ensure high‑quality discussion, personalised insight and practical application.
